IV Drip Rate calculator
The IV drip rate calculator converts an ordered volume and infusion time into drops per minute for a gravity set. You enter the volume in millilitres, the time in minutes and the drop factor printed on the tubing, and it returns the gtt/min you count against the drip chamber.
The formula
Drip rate (gtt/min) = volume (mL) x drop factor (gtt/mL) / time (min). The drop factor comes from the tubing packaging, not from the order — macrodrip sets are commonly 10, 15 or 20 gtt/mL and microdrip sets are 60 gtt/mL.
A worked example
An order for 1000 mL over 8 hours with 15 gtt/mL tubing: 8 hours is 480 minutes, so 1000 x 15 / 480 = 31.25, rounded to 31 gtt/min. The calculator rounds to a whole drop because you cannot count a fraction of one.
When the answer looks wrong
Results above 200 gtt/min or below 1 gtt/min are flagged. Almost always the cause is a unit mix-up — hours entered where minutes were expected, or a microdrip factor used with a macrodrip set. Recheck the inputs before you accept a warned result.
What this does not do
This calculates a rate; it does not verify the order, the fluid, the compatibility or the line. It does not account for a pump (use the infusion pump rate calculator for mL/hr) and it cannot know whether the volume is appropriate for your patient. Every result is a check on your arithmetic, not a clinical decision. Confirm the order, the concentration on the label and your own policy before administering anything.
Frequently asked questions
Where do I find the drop factor?
On the IV tubing packaging. It is a property of the set, not of the order, and using the wrong one is the most common source of a wrong drip rate.
What is the difference between macrodrip and microdrip?
Macrodrip sets deliver larger drops, typically 10 to 20 gtt/mL, and suit routine volumes. Microdrip sets deliver 60 gtt/mL for small or precise volumes such as paediatric infusions.
Should I round the drip rate?
Yes, to the nearest whole drop, because drops are counted individually. The calculator does this for you.
