Weight Converter calculator
The weight converter switches a patient weight between pounds and kilograms in either direction. It is the smallest tool in Nursana and one of the most used, because almost every weight-based dose starts with a weight that was recorded in the wrong unit for the calculation you need.
The conversion
One pound is 0.453592 kilograms, and one kilogram is 2.20462 pounds. To go from pounds to kilograms, divide by 2.2046; to go the other way, multiply by it.
Quick reference
- 110 lb = 49.9 kg
- 150 lb = 68.0 kg
- 180 lb = 81.6 kg
- 220 lb = 99.8 kg
Why the unit is a patient-safety issue
A weight recorded in pounds but treated as kilograms overstates the patient by roughly a factor of 2.2, and every weight-based dose calculated from it inherits that error. This is a documented, recurring category of medication error, which is why many institutions require weights to be recorded in kilograms only.
What this does not do
This converts a number. It does not tell you whether the weight recorded in the chart is current, measured rather than stated, or the right weight convention for the dose you are calculating. Every result is a check on your arithmetic, not a clinical decision. Confirm the order, the concentration on the label and your own policy before administering anything.
Frequently asked questions
How many kilograms is 150 pounds?
68.0 kg. 150 / 2.2046 = 68.04.
Why do hospitals insist on kilograms?
Because weight-based dosing is written in mg/kg. A pounds-for-kilograms mix-up produces a dose about 2.2 times too high, so removing the ambiguity removes the error.
Do I need this if the dose calculator already converts?
Not for that calculation — the weight-based calculators convert internally. This is for the times you just need the number, such as charting or a handoff.
