Temperature Converter calculator
The temperature converter switches a value between Fahrenheit and Celsius in either direction. It exists because charting, equipment and references frequently disagree on scale, and converting a fever in your head at 3 a.m. is exactly when an arithmetic slip happens.
The formulas
Celsius = (Fahrenheit - 32) x 5 / 9. Fahrenheit = (Celsius x 9 / 5) + 32. The two scales cross at -40, which is the one value that reads the same on both.
Reference points worth knowing
- 37.0 C = 98.6 F — the traditional normal, though normal varies by person, site and time of day.
- 38.0 C = 100.4 F — the threshold most fever definitions use.
- 39.0 C = 102.2 F — high fever in most protocols.
- 35.0 C = 95.0 F — the usual hypothermia threshold.
Measurement site matters
Oral, axillary, tympanic, temporal and rectal readings are not interchangeable, and a converted number carries the same site limitation as the original. Convert the scale, then interpret against your protocol for that site.
What this does not do
This converts a number between scales. It does not interpret a temperature, apply a fever protocol, adjust for measurement site or account for antipyretics already given. It converts or computes a number and stops there. Interpreting it is your job, alongside your own assessment and your institution guidance.
Frequently asked questions
What is 38.5 C in Fahrenheit?
101.3 F. (38.5 x 9 / 5) + 32 = 101.3.
What is 100.4 F in Celsius?
38.0 C — the threshold most fever definitions use.
Does the measurement site change the conversion?
No. The arithmetic is identical; the site affects how you interpret the value, not how it converts.
