Nurse calculators (PocketRef)
PocketRef is a set of nine bedside calculators for the arithmetic nurses do under time pressure: gravity drip rates, pump rates, weight-based doses, mcg/kg/min vasopressor infusions, desired-over-have, creatinine clearance, body mass index and unit conversions. Every one runs entirely in the app with no connection, and each result comes back with a sanity check when a number lands outside a plausible range.
What is in the set
- Infusion — IV drip rate (gtt/min), infusion pump rate (mL/hr), weight-based infusion (mcg/kg/min).
- Dosing — weight-based dose (mg/kg) with pound-to-kilogram conversion, and desired over have.
- Renal — estimated creatinine clearance by the Cockcroft-Gault equation.
- Assessment — body mass index with its category.
- Conversion — Fahrenheit to Celsius and kilograms to pounds, both directions.
How the sanity checks work
Each calculator carries thresholds for results that are usually a typo rather than a real order — a drip rate above 200 gtt/min, a pump rate above 1000 mL/hr, a clearance far outside the expected range. When a result crosses one, the answer still appears, with a warning telling you what to recheck.
The warning is a prompt to look again, not a clinical judgement. A number inside the range is not automatically safe, and Nursana has no way to know the order, the concentration on the label or the patient in front of you.
No patient data is stored
Inputs are ephemeral. Nothing you type into a calculator is written to storage or sent anywhere — close the page and it is gone. That is why the calculators need no account and no permission.
What this does not do
These calculators do not check orders, do not know your patient, do not hold a drug database and do not flag interactions or contraindications. They compute a formula you already know and show their working. Verify every result against the order and the label before administering anything.
Frequently asked questions
Do the calculators work offline?
Yes. Every calculation runs on your device. Once the page has loaded once, no connection is needed.
Is anything I type saved?
No. Inputs are held in the form while you are on the page and are never written to storage or sent to a server.
Which creatinine clearance formula is used?
Cockcroft-Gault, with the 0.85 factor applied for female patients. It is an estimate, and your institution may prefer a different equation.
Can I use this instead of double-checking with a colleague?
No. Where your policy requires an independent double check, this does not replace it. Treat the calculator as a second opinion on the arithmetic only.
